Comments(0) In the current economic downturn, the market share of Tier II smaller ERP providers has risen significantly while those of ERP heavyweights SAP and Oracle have dropped proportionately and Microsoft Dynamics edged slightly ahead.
According to a 2010 survey by vendor-neutral ERP consultants Panorama Consulting Group, the market share of Tier II ERP vendors grew from 23% to 30% last year while ERP leader SAP dropped from 35% to 31% and Oracle from 28% to 25%. Microsoft Dynamics held its own, growing slightly from 14% to 15% during the same period. Panorama’s 2008 survey was based on 1,300 respondents worldwide from 2005 to 2008 while the 2010 survey was tallied from 1,600 participants last year.

Comments(0) I’ve been pushing off writing this review for a while now; primarily because the kind of book is very hard, if not impossible, to read cover to cover. This is a cookbook, it contains more than 60 recipes on how to accomplish various AX development tasks. I’ve decided to review the book based on the premise that it is a cookbook. To me a valuable cookbook contains recipes for desirable results (i.e. something I wish I could cook), and a valuable recipe enables me to reproduce the result (i.e. I’ll be able to cook). This book delivers exactly that.
Each recipe in the book contains an introduction, a “How to do it” and a “How it works” section. This makes the recipes easy to follow, and provides bits of necessary and interesting background information. The book only contains recipes on classic MorphX AX tasks – you will not find any recipes on SSRS reports or Enterprise Portal development – which is a shame, as ramping up knowledge in these new areas is just as important.
The majority of the book is listings of X++ source code. If you, like me, likes to read code this book is for you. The book reminds me of my early teenage years where I subscribed to a Danish magazine named Source, which contained various implementations of various programs. The code in this book is focused at getting the job done, the code is direct and to the point – it doesn’t contain comments or labels. For production quality code I would expect more, but this is a cookbook, and by keeping the code simple the book becomes easier to read.
I have a secondary reason for liking this book. My job in the Microsoft Dynamics AX team is to enable developers to be productive, in other words making it easy to accomplish AX development tasks. This books give me and my team a good perspective into some typical tasks, and how easy (or cumbersome) they are to accomplish. For this reason this book will get a position within reach on my bookshelf.
The book is written by Mindaugas Pocius and published by Packt Publishing.

Comments(0) Recently I did an interview and technology preview on my blog about AX.NET, a new Microsoft Dynamics AX add-on offering. I was impressed with its capabilities for working with Dynamics AX business logic and objects from .NET and the possibilities it will offer to application developers who need to integrate with Dynamics AX.
In this post, I focused on the technical
aspects of what AX.NET will offer customers and Microsoft partners. Here I want to raise the issue of how such possible offerings affect a CIO’s
decision-making process when considering Microsoft Dynamics AX, as well as the options
that exist to help a given customer implement and extend its Dynamics AX

A busy long weekend with various project deployments coming my way. The best pick out of those was AX Retail/POS Deployment as it had various components and various teams working on the deployment and it was a long one which spanned over more than 7 hours.
We deployed the new POS app onto 2 stores. This was the second release and apart from the normal Dynamics AX AOD Deployment cycle, I had a chance to deploy some new retail components like installing Transaction, Data Director Services, installing LS POS .Net Retail Scheduler Service, Pushing the Data Director jobs onto the stores, The deployment went cool without any hiccups apart from a few network glitches.
